When to DIY and When to Call Someone
A small home tempts you to fix everything yourself. The systems are fewer, the pipe runs are shorter, and the whole structure feels knowable in a way a full sized house never does. That instinct is right most of the time and dangerous a small fraction of the time, and the whole skill is telling the two apart before you pick up a tool. Get it right and you save real money on labor you never needed. Get it wrong and you can flood a floor, void a warranty, break a law, or foul the air you sleep in.

Sort the job before you sort your tools
Almost every repair falls into one of three buckets: work that is yours by default, work that depends on your skill and patience, and work that belongs to a licensed pro no matter how handy you are. The trap is judging by how hard a job looks on a video; the real test is what happens if your fix fails while you sleep. Ask three questions before you touch anything:

Detectors are the rare case where the pro grade result is fully DIY, and the only real skill is keeping a calendar. In a single room tiny house that still means one alarm in the living zone and a second inside the sleeping loft, tracked by the date printed on the unit, not the date you bought it. Work the DIY checklist first: wash the indoor filter (a clog is the most common cause), confirm the condensate drain is not backed up, clear debris off the outdoor condenser so it can shed heat, then reset at the breaker for fifteen minutes. If cooling returns, you saved a service call. If airflow is strong but the air still will not get cold, and especially if ice is forming on the copper lines or the coil, stop. Those are the signatures of a low charge or a compressor fault, both on the far side of the 608 line.
