Pest Prevention That Doesn’t Rely on Sprays
A tiny home does not give pests much to work with, but the little it offers is concentrated: warmth, a few crumbs, and a few hundred square feet of hiding space sitting right against a wall cavity. Keeping mice, ants, and termites out comes down to two habits: close the openings they walk through, and take away the food and water that made the walk worth it. Chemical sprays belong at the end of that list, not the start, and if you do the first two jobs well you will rarely reach for them.

Start with a gap survey, not a store run
The reflex at the first sign of a pest is to buy something. Hold off for one afternoon and walk the perimeter of your home with a flashlight instead. You are hunting for daylight, drafts, and gaps, and the size that counts is smaller than most people expect. According to Department of Energy Building America guidance, mice can enter through gaps as small as 1/4 inch, roughly the width of a pencil, so any opening at or above that size goes on your list to seal.

Weep holes are the exception. They drain moisture out of masonry, so plugging them solid invites rot, while leaving them open invites insects. The answer is a screen sized for bugs rather than water: weep holes can be screened against termites and small insects using fine mesh with openings of about 0.5 mm (roughly 1/55 inch), fine enough to block insects while still letting water pass.
Close the three gaps rodents use most
Once the survey is done, three openings account for most of the trouble in a compact home, and each has a settled fix.
The first is the door. A sweep that has hardened, torn, or worn short leaves a slot at floor level. The EPA advises that doors which do not seal at the bottom be fitted with weatherproof sweeps, or have the threshold built up, so the gap under the door is less than 1/4 inch. That number is the target: measure the gap with the door closed, and if a pencil rolls under it, the sweep needs replacing.
The second is the fan and vent openings. Air already moves through them, which is exactly why a rodent finds them. The EPA recommends covering fan and vent openings with galvanized mesh having openings of 1/4 inch or smaller, which blocks entry without choking the airflow the vent provides.
The third is every other hole the survey turned up. Stuffing them with foam or paper feels like progress, but soft fillers do not last, because a mouse chews back through. Choose what a rodent cannot gnaw instead. For plugging openings of 1/4 inch or greater, the EPA names knitted copper mesh, steel wool, and cement among the best materials, because rodents can gnaw through softer substances. Remove the reasons to visit
Sealing keeps pests out of the walls; housekeeping keeps them from bothering to try. A tiny home helps here, because there is little surface area to manage, but it punishes slips just as fast: one open bag of rice or a sticky counter is a stronger signal in 250 square feet than it would be in a full-size kitchen.
- Store dry food in sealed hard containers. Glass or thick plastic with a tight lid, not the original cardboard or a clipped bag. This one habit keeps mice and pantry moths uninterested.
- Deny water. Fix the slow drip under the sink, wipe condensation off cold water lines, and empty standing water overnight. Rodents and insects need water more urgently than food.

Say it is late November and you notice a cold thread of air near the base cabinet where the kitchen sink drains. You pull the contents out, shine a light into the back corner, and find a few droppings next to where the drain pipe drops through the floor. The hole around the pipe measures close to 3/8 inch, above the quarter-inch threshold, and it has been letting in both the draft and the mouse.
You do not buy a spray. You pack knitted copper mesh tightly around the pipe with a screwdriver, then seal over it with a bead of caulk so nothing can drag it loose. While the cabinet is empty you check the front door: the sweep has curled at one end, leaving a gap near half an inch, so you fit a new weatherproof sweep and confirm the closed gap is now under a quarter inch. When sealing does not solve it
Prevention is not always clean on the first pass, and a small home leaves little room to ignore a lingering problem. The usual failure has a plain diagnosis.
If you sealed every gap you could find and still hear scratching after a week, assume one of two things: an entry point you missed, or an animal now closed inside with you. Both call for a night-time recheck with the lights off and your ear near the walls, not another trip to the store for spray.

Set a few snap traps along the wall base where you saw activity, since a trap tells you whether anything is still inside without using chemicals.
