Composting, Incinerating, or Traditional: Choosing a Tiny-Home Toilet
Flip a light switch wrong and you replace a bulb. Choose the wrong toilet and you rebuild plumbing, rewire a circuit, or ration showers to keep a bin dry. The toilet is the one fixture in a tiny home that reaches into your water tank, your electrical panel, and your morning routine all at once. Composting, incinerating, and traditional flush are not three versions of one product. Each removes waste a different way, and each sends the bill to a different place: your water supply, your power draw, or the maintenance you handle by hand.
Count your hookups before you shop
Pick the system your infrastructure can already feed, not the one with the best brochure. Three questions settle most of the choice before price ever enters:
- Where does the waste go? A sewer line, a septic tank, or a large holding tank makes a flush toilet realistic. A 30 gallon fresh tank on a trailer does not.
- How much electrical service can you spare? A dedicated 20 amp circuit is the entry ticket for an electric incinerating toilet, and it competes with everything else on a small panel.

Traditional flush: cheap to buy, thirsty to run

Electric and gas versions split along the same line as everything else in a tiny home: which utility you can spare.

A real decision: two people, off-grid, 30 amp service
Consider a couple living full time in a 24 foot trailer on solar, with a 30 amp service and a 40 gallon fresh water tank they refill by hauling. Flush is tempting for the comfort, but the math sinks it: even a 1.28 gallon WaterSense toilet would drain that tank in days and leave them nowhere legal to send blackwater. Electric incinerating is out for a different reason, because a 2,000 watt burn on a dedicated circuit is more power than their solar and battery bank want to give up for 90 minutes at a time. When it goes wrong
Every system fails in its own way, and the fixes are specific:
- Composting toilet smells like ammonia or sewage. The urine bottle is overdue for emptying, or liquids are reaching the solids bin. Empty the bottle, confirm the separator is seated, and check that the vent fan is running. A dry solids bin should smell like soil, not waste.
- Solids bin fills faster than expected. Either the household is larger than the 60-80 use rating assumes, or too much liquid is getting in. Confirm everyone uses the toilet as designed, sitting for liquids included, so the diverter can do its job.
- Electric incinerator trips the breaker or will not heat. A 2,000 watt unit needs its own 20 amp dedicated circuit. Sharing it with another load is the usual cause. Verify the circuit and test the heating element and door switch before assuming the control board failed.
- Incinerator cycle leaves damp residue instead of dry ash. The cycle was interrupted or the chamber was overfilled past its rated uses. Let a full clean cycle finish and respect the 40 to 60 use chamber limit on the gas unit.
- Low-flow flush toilet runs weakly or clogs. A 1.28 gallon flush has less water to move waste, so it needs a clear trapway and a properly adjusted fill valve. Check the flapper and the tank water level before blaming the design.
