A tiny home has a huge amount of surface area for its volume, so a single drafty window or an uninsulated wheel well can undo the work of a good heater. Before spending a dollar on heat, spend an afternoon finding and stopping the leaks. Run your hand around door frames and outlets on a windy day, or hold a lit incense stick near seams and watch where the smoke bends.

Know what a watt actually costs you

Every electric heater, cheap or fancy, converts electricity to heat, so your bill is decided by how many kilowatt-hours you burn and what your utility charges. The average U.S. residential retail electricity price in 2025 was 17.30 cents per kilowatt-hour, which is the number to plug in when you estimate any electric option. The cheapest electric heat: a right-sized heat pump

An air-source heat pump does not burn a watt to make a unit of heat. It uses that watt to pull existing heat from the outside air and move it indoors, which is why it can deliver several units of warmth for each unit of electricity. In practice, a modern air-source heat pump can cut electricity use for heating by 50% compared with electric-resistance furnaces and baseboard heaters, which makes it the most affordable electric way to heat a small space gently. Applied to the example above, halving the electricity roughly turns that 26-cents-per-hour resistance heater into a 13-cents-per-hour heat pump doing the same job.

When you compare models, look at the heating efficiency rating rather than the price tag. To meet ENERGY STAR and federal purchasing rules, a residential split-system air-source heat pump must reach at least 7.8 HSPF2, while the best available models on the market reach about 11 HSPF2. Propane heat does have one catch the specs do not show: it releases water vapor as it burns. In a tightly sealed tiny home that moisture has nowhere to go, so crack a window or roof vent whenever a propane unit is running, and never sleep with an unvented heater on. A cheap battery-powered carbon monoxide alarm is not optional here, it is the price of admission.

Wood heat, and the emissions rule that matters

A small wood stove is the romantic choice, and for a fully off-grid cabin it can be the practical one, since it needs no fuel deliveries and throws steady radiant warmth. If you go this route, buy a currently certified stove rather than a used relic. Under EPA Step 2 New Source Performance Standards, effective May 15, 2020, a newly certified wood room heater may emit no more than 2.0 grams of particulate matter per hour when tested with crib wood (2.5 grams per hour with cord wood). A stove that meets that limit burns cleaner, uses less wood for the same heat, and is far less likely to fall foul of local rules.

Size a wood stove down, not up. In a tiny space an oversized stove forces you to run it smoldering and cool, which wastes fuel and coats the flue with creosote. A small stove run hot is cleaner and safer.

A worked example: 200 square feet in a cold snap

Picture a 200-square-foot cabin on a trailer, well insulated, parked where nights drop into the low twenties Fahrenheit. When the warmth disappears

Heat systems tend to fail on the coldest night, so know the moves in advance:

  • The heat pump blows cool air and hums. It is probably running a defrost cycle, which is normal in the cold and lasts a few minutes. If cool air continues, check that the outdoor unit is not buried in snow or leaves, and that the filter is clean.
  • The propane heater will not stay lit. The low-oxygen sensor may be doing its job, which is your cue to add ventilation immediately, not to defeat the sensor. In cold weather a 1 lb cylinder can also frost over and starve the burner, so keep a spare warm indoors and swap it in.
  • The room feels damp and the windows fog. You are making moisture faster than you are venting it. Increase airflow, run the exhaust fan, and consider a small desiccant dehumidifier.
  • Everything is off and it is getting cold. Close off any loft or unused corner with a curtain to shrink the space you are heating, layer up, and lean on the propane backup while you diagnose the main unit in daylight.
