Tiny-Home Internet: Reliable Wi-Fi On or Off the Grid
Working or streaming from a tiny home means solving a problem a normal house quietly hands to the phone company. There is no address a technician already services, often no pole to string a line from, and sometimes no cellular bar to speak of. Three technologies cover almost every tiny home ever parked: fixed wireless from a nearby tower, a cellular hotspot on a phone plan, and low-orbit satellite. Each one wins in a different place, at a different price, and with a different appetite for your battery bank. The real work is matching the tool to your exact spot on the map before you spend a dollar.
Match the connection to where you actually parked
Location decides more than budget here. Run through your options in the order that a weak-signal rural lot forces on you:
- Fixed wireless or a wired hookup is the cheapest and lowest-power choice when it exists. If your lot sits inside a fixed-wireless provider’s coverage, or a neighbor’s fiber run reaches the property line, take it. A small outdoor antenna or a buried line draws almost nothing and needs no dish.
- A cellular hotspot is the middle path. If you can hold two or more bars of LTE or 5G, an unlimited hotspot plan or a dedicated modem with an external antenna often beats satellite on both cost and latency.
- Low-orbit satellite is the answer when the other two fail. It works almost anywhere with a clear view of the sky, which is exactly the situation most off-grid tiny homes are in.
Most people skip straight to satellite because it is the famous option, then discover they had a cheaper choice sitting unused. Check the quiet ones first.
What a satellite dish actually pulls from your battery bank
Satellite is the power-hungry option, and on an off-grid system every watt is a battery and a solar panel you have to buy. The full-size dish is the one to watch. The Starlink Standard (Gen 3) dish has an average power draw of 75-100 watts, a continuous load you must size your battery and solar systems around if you want it running overnight. At the top of that range, a dish left on all day is close to 2.4 kilowatt-hours, a meaningful slice of a small off-grid budget.
The smaller unit changes the math completely. The Starlink Mini averages 25-40 watts and accepts a 12-48V DC input, so it can run straight off a tiny-home 12V or 48V battery bank with no inverter in the loop. Dropping the inverter removes a conversion loss and a point of failure, which is why the Mini is the default recommendation for a genuinely off-grid build rather than the Standard dish.
Coverage is the other half of the decision, and here the small unit is usually enough. There is a legal ceiling worth knowing before you buy. FCC rules cap consumer mobile cellular signal boosters at 50 dB maximum gain when used with an inside antenna, under 47 CFR 20.21. Any booster sold for home use has to meet that limit, so treat a listing promising far more as a red flag rather than a bargain. Mount the outside antenna as high as you can and keep it well separated from the inside antenna, because the physical distance between the two matters more to real-world performance than the headline gain number.
What always-on internet costs to run
Whether you are on the grid or off it, the gear runs continuously, so the running cost is a small monthly line you can estimate exactly. Use the US average residential electricity price of 18.83 cents per kWh in April 2026 as your rate. A Standard dish averaging around 90 watts runs about 2.2 kWh a day, roughly 65 kWh a month, which lands near 12 dollars a month. The Mini at around 30 watts uses closer to 0.7 kWh a day, about 22 kWh a month, or a little over 4 dollars. Off-grid you pay that in battery and panel capacity instead of cash, but the ratio holds: the small dish costs roughly a third as much to keep alive.
The cheapest connection is the one whose running cost you calculated before buying, not the one with the flashiest speed test.
A worked example: the off-grid cabin with two bars of nothing
Picture a 240-square-foot cabin on a wooded lot, no utility drop, cellular signal that flickers between one bar and none. Fixed wireless does not reach, and a booster test showed the nearest tower is simply too far to rescue. That points straight at satellite, and specifically at the Mini. The owner mounts it with a clear southern view of the sky, wires it directly into a 12V lithium bank through the DC input, and skips the inverter entirely. When the connection drops
Every one of these systems fails sometime, and the failure is almost never the headline hardware. Work the problem from the outside in before you blame the dish or the modem:
- Check power and voltage first. On an off-grid system a slow or dead connection is often a sagging battery, not a network fault. If the bank dropped low overnight, the dish may be browning out rather than truly offline.
- Clear the sky view. A satellite dish needs an unobstructed line to the sky. A new branch, snow on the dish, or a parked trailer can carve a hole in your uptime that looks exactly like a service outage.
- Reseat the connection, then power-cycle. Loose DC leads and weatherworn connectors are common in mobile installs. Reseat the cables, then restart the router and dish before assuming the worst.
- Keep a fallback. A cheap prepaid cellular hotspot in a drawer turns a two-day satellite outage into a minor annoyance. Redundancy across two different technologies is the only real cure for a hard-down link.
The pattern behind almost every tiny-home outage is environmental, not electronic: power, obstruction, or a loose wire. Rule those three out and you have solved the large majority of connection problems without calling anyone.
