What changes is the space you have to treat them and, if you live off-grid, the distance to help. Before buying anything, picture the last year in your space. Most tiny-home first aid falls into a short list of predictable events, and the kit should be built for those first, not for wilderness trauma you will probably never see.

  • Cuts and nicks from prepping food in a tight galley where the knife, the cutting board, and your other hand share ten inches of counter.
  • Burns from a wood stove, a propane cooktop, or a kettle in a kitchen you cannot step back from.

Stock for that list heavily: adhesive bandages in several sizes, gauze, medical tape, antiseptic wipes, burn gel or hydrogel dressings, an elastic wrap for sprains, fine-point tweezers, blunt scissors, and any personal prescriptions. Everything else is an addition to this core, not a replacement for it.

The numbers worth memorizing

Guessing at quantities is how kits end up with forty bandages and no gauze. A useful baseline is the published minimum, and the American Red Cross recommended list is specific. It calls for aspirin as 81 mg x 4 tablets (or one 325 mg tablet) to chew during a suspected heart attack, along with eight sterile 4×4 in gauze pads and two pairs of latex-free medical exam gloves. Those gloves matter more than people expect: in a small home, whoever gets hurt and whoever treats them are often the same two people, and clean hands are not guaranteed when the injury happens.

If your home sits far from an ambulance response, that math is the argument for two things: knowing hands-only CPR, and, for some households, keeping an automated external defibrillator on hand. An AED is a serious purchase, but so is a ten-minute wait on a rural road. At the least, make sure a second person knows where the kit lives and how to open it.

A scenario: a deep cut, off the grid, after dark

Most kitchen cuts stop here. The tourniquet and the splint are for the small number of cases that do not, and knowing you have them changes how calmly you can work through the steps that usually do the job.

What to do when it goes wrong
