A hot meal during an outage does more than fill a stomach. It resets the mood of a dark, cold tiny home in about the time it takes to boil water. You do not need a second kitchen for that. One dependable burner, the right fuel, and three or four pans will carry you through almost any interruption without turning your galley into a gear locker.

How often you will actually reach for it

A backup burner is not a once-a-decade prop. U.S. electricity customers averaged 5.6 hours of power interruption per customer in 2022 (that number includes major storm events), and a single regional storm can push one household well past the average. In a tiny home, the range often runs on the same grid tie or the same battery bank that just failed, so the cooktop is frequently the first thing you lose. A standalone burner keeps eating separate from everything else you are trying to keep alive on limited power.

The safety rule that comes before any gear

Every fuel-burning stove gives off carbon monoxide, and a small interior volume turns that from a nuisance into a real hazard fast. The CDC warns never to run a generator, charcoal grill, camp stove, or any fuel-burning device inside a home, basement, or garage, or outdoors within 20 feet of a window, door, or vent. Treat that as a hard line, not a suggestion. Butane and propane burners belong outside or in a wide-open doorway with real cross-ventilation, never on a closed-up counter, unless the specific appliance is built and rated for indoor use. Keep a battery-powered carbon monoxide alarm running in the sleeping area no matter which stove you pick.

Choosing the burner: butane, propane, or induction

Three formats cover nearly every tiny-home setup, and the right one depends on how much you cook and what power you can spare.

  • High-output butane. The Iwatani 35FW is the workhorse of the category. It puts out 15,000 BTU/hr from a solid brass burner and delivers roughly 55 minutes of burn time per canister at full power, and it weighs about 4.2 lb, so it slides into a drawer. High output means fast boils, but it also burns through fuel faster.

Sizing the fuel you keep on hand

Fuel math is where most backup plans quietly fall apart. Butane canisters are easy to count: at 15,000 BTU/hr, the Iwatani empties a canister in under an hour of hard boiling, so a four-pack is roughly a weekend of real cooking, or longer if you mostly simmer. Propane scales better for extended stretches. The EIA lists the heat content of propane at 91,452 BTU per gallon, so a single 1 lb cylinder (about a quarter gallon) holds near 21,500 BTU, enough for roughly two hours on a typical 10,000 to 12,000 BTU camp burner. A 20 lb tank holds far more and costs the least per meal, if you have a safe outdoor spot to store it. Whatever you choose, keep at least twice what you think a worst-case outage needs, because refills disappear from local shelves the moment a storm is in the forecast.

A worked example: a 48-hour ice storm

Picture an ice storm that drops the grid on a Friday night, with crews estimating two days to restore. In a 200 sq ft home, the goal is not gourmet cooking. It is two hot points in the day plus coffee, which is enough to keep morale and body temperature steady.

Plan for hot food twice a day, not restaurant meals. Two quick boils and one longer simmer per day is the realistic target during an outage.

Run the Iwatani in the open doorway with the storm door propped and a fan pulling air out. Morning: boil a liter for coffee and oatmeal, about six minutes of flame. Evening: bring a one-pot chili or pasta to a boil, then simmer 25 minutes, call it 30 minutes of flame near half power. That is roughly 40 minutes of burner time a day, so two days lands near 80 minutes total. Against the 55-minute-per-canister figure at maximum power (and you are well below maximum during the simmer), two canisters cover the storm comfortably with one in reserve. Fill a wide-mouth thermos with the leftover boiling water each night so a hot drink in the morning costs zero extra fuel.

A short kit that covers most meals

  • One 8-inch to 10-inch pot with a tight lid (lids cut boil time and fuel use sharply).
  • One nonstick skillet for eggs, tortillas, and reheating leftovers.
  • A long lighter plus a backup, kept well away from the fuel.
  • A metal windscreen, since even a light breeze in a doorway wastes gas.
  • A wide-mouth vacuum thermos to bank hot water between cooks.

When it goes wrong

Cold is the usual culprit. Butane loses pressure below about 40 degrees Fahrenheit, so a canister that sputters is often just chilled: warm it in your hands or an inside pocket for a few minutes, never with an open flame. If the burner will not ignite, check that the canister is seated square in its slot and the lock lever is fully closed, then try the manual spark with a long lighter. A flame that burns tall and yellow instead of blue usually means poor air mixing or a partly blocked port, so shut it off, let it cool, and clear the burner holes with a pin. If you smell gas at any point, close the valve, remove the canister, and carry the whole stove outside before troubleshooting further. And if fuel runs lower than planned, drop to one hot meal a day and lean on no-cook staples (nut butter, canned fish, crackers, dried fruit) to stretch what is left.

Can I use a butane stove inside my tiny home if I crack a window?

A cracked window is not enough ventilation for a combustion stove in such a small volume. The safe practice is to cook outdoors or in a fully open doorway with cross-ventilation and a carbon monoxide alarm nearby. Reserve genuinely indoor cooking for induction, which produces no combustion gases at all.

How many butane canisters should I store for a household of two?

Plan on roughly one canister per day of active cooking, then double it. If you cook two hot meals a day on a high-output burner, six to eight canisters give you a comfortable four-day buffer. Rotate the stock so nothing sits unused for years, and store canisters somewhere cool and out of direct sun.

Is an induction plate worth it if I already own a gas burner?

It is worth it when you have battery capacity to spare, because it lets you cook indoors safely during bad weather when standing in a doorway is miserable. The catch is power: at 1,800 W it will drain a small power station quickly, so it pairs best with a larger battery or solar setup rather than a pocket-sized unit.
