Cable Management for Sane People
Every other category in a small home eventually gives in to a system. Cables do not. They multiply in drawers, knot themselves behind furniture, and outlive the devices they came with, which is exactly how they quietly defeat otherwise organized people. The reassuring part is that you do not need anything elaborate to win. A handful of small, cheap interventions gets you about 90 percent of the way, and the last 10 percent genuinely does not matter.

Sort by where you use them, not what they are
The tidy instinct is to sort by type: all the USB-C cables in one box, older cables in another, adapters in a third. That is not how anyone actually lives. You charge a phone at the bedside, a laptop at the desk, and headphones in the living room, and no one walks to a central cable box each morning. Sort by location instead. Decide the two or three places where you naturally set a device down, then give each of those spots exactly the cables it needs and nothing more.
This works partly because of how homes are wired. In a house built to code, receptacles are spaced so that no point along a wall is more than 6 feet from an outlet, which caps receptacle spacing at a maximum of 12 feet apart. A charging station almost never needs a long cable to reach power, so the extension leads people buy to bridge the gap are usually solving a problem the wall already solved.
One charger that lives permanently at a drop point removes more chaos than any amount of coiling and re-coiling loose cables ever will.
The one-hour audit
Empty every cable you own onto a table. For each one, name the device it belongs to out loud. If you cannot name the device, or you no longer own it, that cable is finished. Most homes discover that roughly a third of their cables fail this test. Electronics retailers and municipal recycling centers accept old cables at no cost, so none of it needs to reach the trash. Work through the pile in one pass:
- Name it or lose it: a cable with no matching device is dead weight. Set it in the recycling pile immediately.
- Group by destination: pull the survivors into small piles for each station (bedside, desk, entry, kitchen).
- Cut the count: one cable per device per station. Duplicates go to the recycling pile or a single labeled spares bag.
- Cap the strays: one small bin for the genuinely unknowable adapters. Everything else has a home now.
While everything is out, notice how many chargers are plugged in feeding nothing. Devices left plugged in and switched off still draw current, and the U.S. Department of Energy estimates this phantom load is 5 to 10% of an average home’s energy use, costing a household an extra $100 to $200 a year. In a small home running off a modest panel, that waste is also heat you never asked for. A charging station on a switched strip lets you cut power to a whole cluster with one flick.
Labeling that survives contact with reality
Two cables can look identical and behave nothing alike. A cable rated for fast charging and a cheap one that barely trickles are indistinguishable in a drawer, and swapping them is how a phone ends up at 12 percent before a morning meeting. Label the ones that matter. A strip of painter’s tape folded into a small flag and a marker is enough; a label maker is nicer but not required. Label the plug end too, because that is the end you actually see when you are tracing which brick belongs to which cable behind a strip. The goal is recognition, not decoration.
Power strips, surge protection, and the numbers worth knowing
One good surge protector per cluster of devices is worth the modest cost, and it matters more in a small home, where a single electrical event reaches more of your gear packed into less space. When you compare units, look past the marketing joule count to the ratings that are actually tested. Under UL 1449, a surge protective device’s voltage protection rating is determined using a 6 kV, 3 kA combination wave generator, and the available nominal discharge current ratings run 20 kA, 10 kA, 5 kA, and 3 kA. A higher discharge rating means the device can absorb more and larger surges before it wears out, which is a far better durability signal than a joule number on the box.
Extension cords deserve the same restraint. A UL Listed 14 gauge (14 AWG) extension cord is rated for 15 amps and 1,875 watts at 125 volts, which comfortably covers chargers, a lamp, and a laptop but not a space heater sharing the same cord. Match the cord to the load and keep the run short.
There is one line you should never cross to make a station look tidier. Do not route a cord through a wall, a ceiling, a floor, or a doorway to hide it. OSHA 1910.305(g)(1)(iv) prohibits using flexible cords and extension cords as a substitute for a structure’s fixed wiring and specifically bans running them through holes in walls, ceilings, or floors, or through doorways, windows, or similar openings. If a station needs power a nearby outlet cannot give it, the fix is an electrician adding a receptacle, not a cord threaded through the drywall.
A worked example: the wall behind a fold-down desk
Picture a desk that folds up against the wall in a 200 square foot home, serving as a workstation by day and vanishing by night. Behind it sit a laptop charger, a monitor, a desk lamp, a phone charger, and a pair of powered speakers. Left alone, that is five bricks and five cables that snag every single time the desk goes up. Here is the version that holds:
- One switched surge strip screwed to the underside of the desk, so it rises and falls with the desk instead of dangling. Everything plugs into it, and one switch kills the whole cluster at night, which also ends the phantom draw from the idle chargers.
- Cables shortened to fit with reusable hook and loop ties rather than left at the full length they shipped with. Slack is what tangles, so remove it.
- The phone charger on a small adhesive clip at the front edge, because the phone is the device you grab constantly and it should never require reaching behind anything.
- The strip’s own cord reaching the wall outlet directly, on the same wall and well inside that 6 foot reach, so no extension cord enters the picture at all.
Folding the desk now moves one tidy bundle instead of a nest, and the day the laptop gets replaced you swap one labeled cable instead of playing detective behind the furniture.
When it goes wrong
Assume a station will eventually misbehave, and know the move before it does:
- A charger stopped working. Test the cable and the brick separately on a device you know works before buying anything. Nine times out of ten the cable failed, which is cheap, and the brick is fine.
- The strip is warm to the touch. You have overloaded it, or plugged a heavy appliance into it. Move heaters, kettles, and irons to their own wall outlets and keep the strip for electronics only.
- You keep finding mystery cables. They are drifting out of the strays bin faster than you retire them. Write a date on the bin and recycle anything still unclaimed at six months.
- A surge protector took a hit. Most have a status light and protection that works only once. When the light says the protection is gone, the strip still passes power but no longer guards anything, so replace it rather than trusting it.
Cables are a small problem that grows large through neglect. An hour of sorting, one strip per cluster, a few honest labels, and a firm rule against threading cords through walls will keep a small home calm for years, and calm is the whole point.
